This drastic measure was enacted after approximately 50 individuals, including guests and one crew member, fell ill with suspected norovirus, prompting a full lockdown.

The incident follows a passenger's death and approximately 50 others falling ill with suspected norovirus, according to Global News.
The Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed to Global News that 48 guests and one crew member were actively displaying gastrointestinal symptoms as of May 13, 2026.
The confinement was ordered by the prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and Gironde department, Étienne Guyot, based on recommendations from the regional health agency.
This event is distinct from a hantavirus outbreak on another vessel, which has also put European health authorities on alert, as noted by The Guardian.
The ship, which departed Belfast on May 8 and Liverpool on May 9, was midway through a 14-night cruise when it reached Bordeaux on May 12.
