jalopnik reported on September 28, 2025, on a selection of the rarest vehicles built by Ford, highlighting several obscure models that many enthusiasts may not recognize. The list includes performance-oriented and specialty cars that saw extremely limited production or were developmental prototypes that never reached the public market.
Among the rare models detailed was the 1966 Fairlane 500 R-Code, a homologation special for drag racing of which only 57 were built. The publication also noted a V10-powered Mustang prototype that was ultimately shelved. Other vehicles in the collection include the Mustang McLaren M81, a product of a partnership between the two companies; the Escort RS1700T, a rally car project of which only a few prototypes survive; and the GTX1 Roadster. The source material identifies these vehicles as some of the most obscure in the automaker's history.
