Jony Ive's design collective, LoveFrom, has partnered with Japanese manufacturer Balmuda to create the Sailing Lantern, a portable light priced at $4,800, Business Insider reported on September 28, 2025. The project began after Ive, the former chief design officer at Apple, was unable to find a suitable lantern for his own yacht that could withstand harsh maritime conditions. The collaboration was described by Balmuda's founder as combining a nautical idea with modern LED technology to create an "excellent tool."
9to5mac.com reported, The lantern is a limited edition of 1,000 units and is constructed from materials like marine-grade stainless steel and polished glass to resist salt air and water. A single dial adjusts both the brightness and the color temperature of the light. While the design is new, it was inspired by the functional requirements of historical nautical lanterns and Fresnel lamps. The product is expected to begin shipping in March 2026.
