Manifesto Released in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case Shows Suspect's Grievances Against Healthcare Industry
The three-paragraph manifesto allegedly written by Luigi Mangione, the suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder, has been released, revealing detailed criticisms of the American healthcare system. The document, verified by law enforcement officials, provides insight into the mindset of the 26-year-old former tech worker prior to the December 4 shooting in Manhattan.

According to The New York Times, investigators recovered the handwritten statement during Mangione's arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania. In it, the author describes the killing as a "symbolic takedown" of the healthcare industry.

The short document focuses heavily on criticisms of healthcare costs and outcomes in America, specifically addressing federal investigators and stating the author acted alone. It references statistics about U.S. healthcare spending and life expectancy rates compared to other nations.

Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and former software engineer, remains in custody at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania. CBS News reports that while he is being held in isolation, he is not under suicide watch and has shown no violent behavior since his detention.

The release of the manifesto comes as authorities work to extradite Mangione to New York to face murder charges. His legal team has indicated they will contest the extradition.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including a six-month period when Mangione reportedly ceased communication with friends and family.
