Nothing Launches AI Software App Store

On September 30, 2025, consumer technology company Nothing announced it is launching a platform for AI-built smartphone software, The Verge reported. The initiative includes "Playground," a tool that allows users to create their own applications and widgets from text prompts, and "Essential Apps," a storefront where those creations can be published and downloaded. Nothing CEO Carl Pei framed the launch as a challenge to the "outdated and elitist system" of current app stores. The company described the project as its first step toward an "AI-focused operating system."

While Nothing is promoting the initiative as a step toward a new OS, the platform is built on Android. The initial version of Playground will focus on creating widgets, as Nothing stated the technology is not yet mature enough for full-screen app development. The company does not have immediate plans to monetize the platform, focusing instead on building a creator community. Nothing's stated goal is to evolve the platform into a full "Essential OS," creating a more open and personalized mobile experience for users.
