Rick Moranis Returns for 'Spaceballs 2

Variety reported on September 25, 2025, that actor Rick Moranis will end a nearly three-decade hiatus from live-action films to star in "Spaceballs 2". [2] Amazon MGM Studios confirmed Moranis, 72, will reprise his role as Dark Helmet in the sequel to the 1987 comedy. [3, 8] Moranis’s last on-camera film role was in 1997, after which he stepped back from Hollywood to focus on raising his two children as a single parent following his wife's death. [3, 4] While he has taken on occasional voice work, he clarified in past interviews that he had not retired but was being selective about projects. [2, 3] To announce the sequel, the studio released a photo of the cast at a table read, parodying a well-known image from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. [4, 5]

Production on the sequel is underway, with Josh Greenbaum directing. [4, 8] Several actors from the original film are returning, including Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and George Wyner. [5, 8] The cast will also feature new additions, including Keke Palmer, Josh Gad, Anthony Carrigan, and Lewis Pullman, though details about their characters have not been released. [4, 5] Gad is also a writer on the project, along with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. [5] Amazon MGM Studios stated the film is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2027. [2, 8]
