NPR reported on October 1, 2025, that Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada was one of three members of the Democratic caucus who broke with their party to vote with Republicans on a measure to fund the government. Despite their votes, the measure failed to achieve the 60-vote threshold, leading to a partial government shutdown.
wusf.org reported, In a statement, Senator Cortez Masto said she voted to prevent a shutdown because it "would hurt Nevada families and hand even more power to this reckless administration." She cited the high costs, economic slowdown, and a "looming health care crisis" already affecting Nevadans as reasons she could not support a costly shutdown. The Senator also expressed concern for the economic impact on the state's tourism industry and the potential for federal workers and union contractors in Nevada to be out of work without pay. She called for a bipartisan solution to address an impending health care crisis involving expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits.
