On September 29, 2025, Meta officially confirmed that its WhatsApp application for iOS now supports sending and receiving Live Photos, 9to5mac reported. The update allows users to share the dynamic images, which capture 1.5 seconds of video and sound, in their original format. Previously, sharing a Live Photo on the platform converted it into a static image or a lower-quality GIF without audio. The feature was in beta testing before its official release and also includes support for the equivalent "Motion Photos" on Android devices, ensuring cross-platform compatibility.
When a user receives a Live Photo in a chat, a specific icon appears in the corner of the image to indicate it contains motion. Tapping the photo plays the brief video and its accompanying sound, mirroring the experience in the native iOS Photos app. The confirmation was part of a larger announcement by Meta that detailed several other new features, including AI-generated chat themes, new sticker packs, and an easier way to search for group chats. The Live Photos feature is being rolled out progressively, and some users have reported they can receive them but are not yet able to send them.
